The Humanitarian Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Although the country has made significant economic and development progress over recent decades, many communities continue to face serious humanitarian and socio-economic challenges, including food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, economic pressures, and recurring natural disasters. According to the World Food Programme, around 16 million people in Bangladesh are facing acute food insecurity, while approximately 1.6 million young children are affected by acute malnutrition.

Humanitarian needs are particularly significant in areas hosting Rohingya refugees who have fled violence and persecution in Myanmar. Bangladesh is currently hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees, most of whom live in camps in Cox's Bazar, with others residing on Bhasan Char Island. Many refugees remain dependent on humanitarian assistance for essential needs such as food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare.

Bangladesh is also highly exposed to natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, and landslides. These recurring shocks place additional pressure on vulnerable families, refugees, and host communities and can make access to basic necessities even more difficult.

In 2026, the United Nations and humanitarian partners appealed for $710.5 million to address critical needs among Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi host communities. The updated response plan aims to reach up to 1.56 million people, highlighting the continued scale of humanitarian needs in the country.
